This is a recent survey carried out by RSPB at one of the farms owned by Wilson Farming.
The total area of this particular farm is 98 ha’s – 87 ha’s of this farm is planted in miscanthus ranging in age from 3 – 6 years old. The remaining 11 ha’s is in higher level stewardship which consist of several options including; 6 mtr buffer strips, floristically enhanced margins, pollen & nectar margins, enhanced wild bird seed mix’s and some corner field management areas.
As you will see by the very impressive number of species and juveniles seen the biodiversity on this mainly miscanthus farm is working very well and shows the clear benefits to our wildlife that properly managed miscanthus can bring.
Miscanthus alongside carefully thought out stewardship schemes complement each other extremely well and provide an excellent habitat for wildlife.
